Last weekend, I did a fitness class with friends. We went to Barry’s Bootcamp, touted by fitness magazines as “the 1,000-calorie workout.” Clients rotate from sprints on the treadmill to weight exercises on the floor for an hour.
By the end, we were so proud of ourselves and it was such a bonding activity. I get so much joy from challenging my body, and working out with friends makes it even more fun.
I was a little annoyed, though, because the class doesn’t explain anything you’ll be doing before you do it. We had no idea what to expect, and felt like we didn’t get the hang of it until halfway through the class. If I had been informed about certain moves we would do, I could have prepared myself or figured out how to do them before the class so as to maximize the workout. I was also super intimidated by the class, and probably wouldn’t have gone without my two supportive friends by my side.
Sooooo I started thinking…. I’ll be in DC for ten weeks this summer, and I plan to try out lots of different fitness classes. I’ve decided to add a tab on my blog for the summer with Fitness Class Tips. I’ll run through the fitness class I tried that day, breaking down the whole hour, and provide tips for you if it’s your first time. That way, you won’t waste precious workout time trying to figure out the moves the first time!
Trying a new fitness class can be intimidating. When you have no idea what to expect, of course you’re worried you might not be able to do it, that you’ll be singled out, that you’ll spend a bunch of money on a class where you don’t feel a thing.
But I’m here to keep these classes from being intimidating!!!!!!! I’ll take you step by step so that you can have the confidence to give them a try! I’ll also give you an honest breakdown of how many calories I burned and whether I actually thought the class was worth it.
As you can read in older posts, I LOVE Pure Barre. But I wouldn’t have tried it had it not been for the countless fitness advice blogs I read, the people who encouraged me over and over again to give it a try, and the welcoming atmosphere Pure Barre provides for first-time clients. Not every fitness class is like this, and as I branch out, I want to be an aid to other people thinking about certain classes.
I’m taking a leap of faith, not letting myself be intimidated by different fitness fads and instead embracing them as an opportunity to challenge me and to help others. So join me! Check out my thoughts as I attend different classes between May 15 to July 23rd.
