Mint Gym has two locations: one by Dupont Circle and one Downtown. It’s a local DC gym that has gained in popularity over the last couple years for its very well-trained staff and clean facilities. I attended the Downtown location that has two fitness class rooms, and then multiple floors with tons of equipment.
Mint also offers over 70 different kinds of classes, all of which were created by the staff.
I decided to try Power Playground, a bootcamp I’ve heard is well done.
The instructor, ___, was very friendly and helped me check in and understand the format. The class is not led inside a fitness room, but instead in a small part of one floor of the gym where not much equipment was around. It wasn’t enough space for all eight people participating today—which was frustrating. I felt cramped.
However, the class was extremely well designed and the instructor knew exactly what she was doing. Power Playground is a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workout where most parts are set to music. Participants know when to shift to a new exercise when a verse in the song changes, or when the song ends. All the exercises are written on a white board on the side wall, for reference if you ever forget the order. We did different combinations of squats, lunges, pushups, every ab exercise under the sun, and used different sized weights each time. There were four mini “stations” that used various gym equipment, too, like Bosu balls and mats, that we used for the last third of the class, rotating around the stations 4 times.
The class was about an hour, with good stretching at the end. The warm-up was definitely the most challenging, as it required a full circuit of cardio moves with heavy weights.
There were no rests during the class.
Overall, I see why people like MINT. The instructors are motivating, design interesting and challenging workouts, and the facility is quite large. However, I found it frustrating that the class was conducted in just a small corner of the gym. Next week, I’m trying some of their other classes, so I’ll report on those. But as for the gym itself, I would highly recommend it for its cleanliness and variety of machines and classes.
